Hyunji Kim is a South Korean cellist based in the United States.

She started cello at the age of 7 and began her studies as a cellist at the age of 11. She attended Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School in South Korea.

Hyunji was selected for the Ewon Young Artist concert and made her recital debut at 12 years old (2012). Also, she made a concerto debut at 15 with the Yangju Philharmonic Orchestra (2015) in Korea and also appeared with the Korean Chamber Orchestra (2017), NEC Cello Ensemble (2015), and Seoul Soloist Cello Ensemble (2017).

Hyunji is an award-winning cellist, who won the Eumak-Chunchu Competition, Segye-Times Competition, Hanye Music Competition, Eumyeon Competition, and The Korea Herald Competition. She also won the Grand Prize at the New York International Classical Music Competition as a chamber player and the Avenir Prize at the Osaka International Competition.

During her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she was an active chamber player. Her groups were selected to perform in the ‘Spirit of SNU Strings’ held by Seoul National University, so she appeared in Seoul National University Recital Hall (2019) and Seoul Arts Center (2021). She also performed at the Juilliard Winter Chamber Festival in Paul Hall, the Juilliard School (2023).

Hyunji has attended music festivals including Euro Music Academy (Germany, 2015), Tignes Music Alp Festival (France, 2015& 2019), Tanglewood Music Festival (United States, 2023), and the New York String Orchestra Seminar (United States, 2024). As a guest musician, she has performed with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra (South Korea, 2022), conducted by Dalia Stasevska.

Hyunji Kim received her bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University where she studied with Joon-ho Shim and Minji Kim. She is currently studying for her master’s degree at the Juilliard School under Timothy Eddy and Clara Minhye Kim.
